The Unspoken Departure
Their friendship didn't need rules or formal talk. Maybe it was just meant to be, but as they worked together every day, she found herself drawn to him. He was a simple man. Usually, when people brought sweets back from trips, he didn’t care much. But one day, a surprise gift of candies arrived just for him. She had sent them from her office without him even knowing. It was a small, quiet sign of how she felt.
They never really thought they would meet in person, but then one day she said, "I’m coming to see you." He was so happy to finally see the person he had only known through work. When she arrived, he did everything she asked for. He wanted her to have everything she wished for, and he did it gladly. Not because he can't deny, but he didn't want to disappoint her. That was his nature. Those who goes to him, he tries his best not to disappoint. When she left, he felt a deep emptiness, but their bond felt even stronger. They became the kind of friends who could talk about anything in the world. Even though they didn't talk much outside of work hours, it felt like their hearts were always in conversation.
When she said she was coming back a second time, they were both overjoyed. It’s funny how life works—when we expect too much, we usually end up disappointed. But when something wonderful happens out of nowhere, the joy is hard to describe. In fact, that's his policy; never expect anything from anybody. He didn't know what to call their relationship, but he thought about it often.
This time, she only had two small wishes, and he made them happen easily. But she still wouldn't answer his one big question: "How did I win your heart?" He knew he hadn't done anything special to impress her. He wasn't a man of smooth words or bold moves. He just wanted to know why she chose him. She didn't answer; she only gave him a mysterious smile. He was too kind-hearted to understand what that smile meant. To him, life was simple: if someone needs help and you can do it, you do it.
When they said goodbye this time, they both felt a heavy sadness. They weren't sure if God would give them a chance like this again. She had once told him, "I don't want anything from you," but their lives had become so connected that those words didn't feel true anymore.
Soon, things began to change. She started saying, "I need to slowly move away from this." He could feel her pulling back. She is a strong lady with the power to do her will, not to suffer herself. She used to reply to everything he said, but now, she only replied when she felt like it. She started ignoring his messages, even though she still tried to show him he was "important." Her promises to talk once a week were broken because she "didn't have time."
People usually feel sorry for women in these situations, but what about a kind man’s heart? Nobody sees his pain, and nobody offers him comfort. In today’s world, people would simply say "she started ghosting him."
Still, he never blamed her. He told himself that she is a married woman with a lot of responsibilities at home. He made up excuses for her to make himself feel better. He chose to forgive her every time she neglected him.
Now, she is moving on to a better stage in her life. She is leaving without ever answering his question. Even though his heart is hurting, she gives him the empty comfort of saying, "We can still talk later." He tried calling her many times, but there was always some reason why it didn't work out.
He believes that if God brought them together, there must be a good reason why God is pulling them apart now. He struggles to find peace in one thought because he never went looking for her. She came looking for him, and he gave her all the happiness and comfort he could. Maybe that was his only purpose. He console himself with this words, that he did what others want. So, don't expect anything in return.
As I look at his face—full of memories and still waiting for a phone call that might never come—I don't know what to say. I don't know how to comfort a heart that is hurting so quietly.
